In the present day, in which assault on society is so common and tomorrow so uncertain how can we implement faith to live each day? In order to have faith to live we first must understand and know what faith is in our personal lives. The book of Hebrews tells us “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is a spiritual act, not a materialistic thing it is an assurances from God’s heart to ours, it is a gift from God which channels his heart to ours through the Holy Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing what is to come (See 2 Corinthians 1:20-22).
In my early Christian walk, I measured my faith by what I did and did not do. I secretly thought that if I read a certain amount of bible verses and attended church regularly God would listen to my prayers and answered them to my desire. If they were not answered I would lose faith, question His goodness, His love, and His presence. I learned that I couldn’t measure my faith by my deeds, yet I can produce deeds by my faith in Jesus Christ (See 1 Thessalonians 1:3). In others words I do not pray, read my bible, so that God will love, accept me and fulfill his promises. I do so because my faith in him assures me that He does love me, accepts me and will fulfill His promises, even when He does so in ways that do not make sense to me (see Proverbs 3:5-6). I believe it is Jesus Christ’s desire to see a generation that will act, live, and walk in faith because we believe in Him, His word, and promises and not in the sight of our circumstance, fear, doubt or culture.
I’ve learned to examine my faith by taking an inventory of my mind, words, and actions.
Are my thoughts anxious, full of worry and doubt or do I bring my petitions to the Lord and find rest in Him? (See Philippians 4:4-6) Do my words speak the truth about who Christ is and who He has called me to be? (See Jeremiah 29:11) Do my faith and actions work together, or does fear of the unknown/unseen hold me back? (See James 2: 21-23)
Where there is faith in Jesus Christ, we find Jesus Christ is moving. And faith in an assaulted, uncertain generation is a source of armor, as the bible states. It is a shield with which we can extinguish all flaming arrows of the evil one’s attacks, circumstances, words, sickness, and heartaches (Ephesians 6:5) It is a source of encouragement for another (Romans 1:11). Faith assures us we are not alone, and that in difficulties and trials Jesus Christ is by our side, and the He will never leave us or forsake us.
Prayer: Lord we thank you that we find faith to live through You and that Your promises tell us that in you we have peace, and although in this world we will have trouble You have overcome the world. We receive Your courage and Your Spirit to walk by faith. “We believe that as surely as the sun will rise You will appear; You will come to us like the winter rains” (Hosea 6:3). In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
